Brodick Ferry Terminal

Brodick Ferry Terminal, Isle of Aaran, Scotland.

Client: Transport Scotland.
Main Contractor: George Leslie LTD.

Placing of rock armour and associated works. The works was part of a £30 million scheme for a new ferry terminal in Brodick on the Isle of Aaran. The work involved placement of 25,000 ton of rock armour of up to 5 ton weight which all arrived on the island by ship. Mobilisation of the 60 tonne long reach excavator was particularly difficult due to the weight restrictions on the ferries to the island, so a landing craft was charted and picked the excavator up at the slipway in Ballycastle and delivered it directly onto the site at Brodick. A 3D GPS system was used on the excavator for all dredging and placement of rock armour revetments. The works lasted for 11 months.

Plant used:

Hitachi ZX 520, 60 tonne, 23 meter reach.
